"I can't do much, but I want to do something,
so I do what I can."   - Lucy

by Stan Burnett, Founder of Friends

My mother was a hard working soul who never had much money, yet she always managed to send my sister, Teri, and me $10 checks every year on our birthdays and at Christmas. As we got older, we each had children of our own, and my mother would send her grandchildren $10 checks, as well, to celebrate birthdays and Christmas.

Teri and I used to joke about the checks with Mom. We'd ask her why she bothered; afterall, she needed the money more than we did -- why didn't she just keep it? Mom's reply was, "I can't do much, but I want to do something, so I do what I can."

At the time we continued to joke about it, not fully understanding the significance of that simple statement.

In 2007, my mother passed away and my family misses those $10 checks very much, not for the money, but for what they meant to each of us ... she was doing what she could, and her thoughts were with us.

With this in mind, Friends initiated Lucy's Club, not only to honor my mom, but to give donors an opportunity to "do what they can."

Join Lucy's Club by sending $10 to Friends at Christmastime or on a birthday, yours or someone you love. Donate what you can in the spirit of my mother and the concept of "I want to do something, so I do what I can."

Your donation will be extra special to us at Friends and it'll go toward one of the great animal welfare programs in Manzanillo, helping animals and communities.
